A city office is opened like a doll's house, revealing three levels of the working day. At the top, one executive occupies a room built from space, comfort and privilege; beneath him, typists repeat the same rhythm across a regimented row of desks; below them, a dark mailroom keeps paper, parcels and paperwork moving through the building. At the centre, one woman has stepped away from her empty desk and turned towards the only window that does not belong to the city.
This SongScape interpretation of 9 to 5 captures the song's collision of routine and possibility: the system keeps working around her while her attention has already escaped towards open countryside, sunlight and a life beyond the office. Art Deco geometry, seventies colour and stylised cartoon forms give the hierarchy a playful edge, preserving the wit and defiance that make the song much more than a complaint about work.
